MIAMI, Sept. 1 (UPI) -- Wes Helms had five RBI Wednesday in helping Florida outslug Washington 16-10 in a wild game that featured a brawl that emptied both benches in the sixth.
The Marlins scored 14 runs over the first three innings and the teams combined to produce 31 hits.
Washington's Nyjer Morgan was hit by a pitch from starter Chris Volstad in the fourth and even though the Marlins had an 11-run lead at the time, Morgan went on to steal both second and third.
When Morgan came up again in the sixth, Volstad threw behind him. Morgan immediately charged the mound and punched Volstad in the neck. Florida first baseman Gaby Sanchez quickly arrived at the mound and delivered a forearm that sent Morgan to the ground.
Players and coaches from both sides took part in a scuffle before order was restored. Morgan and Volstad were ejected, along with Florida Manager Edwin Rodriguez and relief pitcher Jose Veras.
Washington pitcher Doug Slaten hit Sanchez with a pitch in the seventh, which brought about the ejection of Nationals Manager Jim Riggleman.
Helms had a two-run double during Florida's five-run first The Marlins had another five-run inning in the second, with Helms delivering a two-run single and Michael Stanton a two-run homer.
Volstad (9-9) stayed around long enough to get the win, giving up six runs on nine hits.
Washington Starter Scott Olsen (3-8) retired only five batters while allowing nine runs to take the loss.
