Wozniacki reaches Pilot Pen quarters

NEW HAVEN, Conn., Aug. 25 (UPI) -- No. 1 seed Caroline Wozniacki, despite suffering two service breaks in the first set, stormed into the quarterfinals Wednesday at the Pilot Pen.

Wozniacki eliminated Dominika Cibulkova 6-4, 6-1 and stayed on track for her second straight tournament triumph. She won the rain-delayed event in Montreal Monday and will be the top seed at the U.S. Open -- the year's final major tourney which begins next Monday.

In the quarterfinals, Wozniacki will take on Flavia Pennetta, who posted a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Olga Govortsova.

Fourth-seeded Elena Dementieva advanced with a marathon win over Kateryna Bondarenko 7-6 (7-4), 6-7 (5-7), 6-4. The match lasted more than 3 hours.

Marion Bartoli will meet Dementieva in the quarterfinals after coasting past Anastasia Rodionova 6-3, 6-1.

In other second-round matches, Dinara Safina defeated Daniela Hantuchova 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-2), Maria Kirilenko won over Timea Bacsinszky 6-3, 6-1 and Nadia Petrova eliminated Bethanie Mattek-Sands 6-3, 6-2.

Kirilenko will play Safina in the quarterfinals and Petrova will face second-seeded Samantha Stosur, who won her second-round match Tuesday.
