MLB: New York Yankees 11, Detroit 5

NEW YORK, Aug. 19 (UPI) -- Robinson Cano doubled, homered and drove in three runs Thursday -- all in the sixth inning -- helping carry the New York Yankees past Detroit 11-5.

New York scored nine times in the sixth to down the Tigers for the third day in a row. The Yankees began the day tied for the lead with Tampa Bay in the American League East.

Cano doubled in Mark Teixeira with the first run of the sixth to break a 2-2 tie and then added a two-run homer to finish off the scoring in the inning -- which also featured a two-run double by Austin Kearns and a two-run triple by Derek Jeter.

Phil Hughes (15-5) went six innings to get the victory, allowing two runs on four hits with six strikeouts.

Miguel Cabrera hit a two-run homer, his 31st home run of the year, to give the Tigers an early 2-0 lead. Detroit had won three in a row before losing the final three outings in this four-game series.

Rick Purcell (5-11) started the sixth inning, but did not retire a batter before being removed. He gave up six runs on six hits with three walks in five-plus innings.
