Henrik Sedin named NHL MVP

LAS VEGAS, June 23 (UPI) -- Vancouver forward Henrik Sedin was named Wednesday as the winner of the Hart Memorial Trophy, the top annual honor in the National Hockey League.

The Hart Trophy goes to the league's MVP and it had been won the two previous seasons by Washington's Alex Ovechkin.

Sedin, who plays on a line with his twin brother Daniel, scored 29 goals with 83 assists last season. Both numbers were easily a career high. He became the second Swedish player in NHL history to win the award, joining Peter Forsberg. Sedin and Forsberg are both natives of Ornskoldsvik, Sweden.

Ovechkin and 2007 winner Sidney Crosby of Pittsburgh were the other two finalists for the Hart Trophy.

Earlier Wednesday during the league's annual awards banquet, Ovechkin received the Ted Lindsay Award. That honor goes to the player deemed to be the best in the league by members of the players association.

Ovechkin reached the 100-point total for the third time in his five-year career.

The Jack Adams Award (coach of the year) went to Dave Tippett of the Phoenix Coyotes. Phoenix reached the playoffs for the first time in eight seasons, but fell in the first round to Detroit.
