MLB: New York Mets 10, Washington 7

WASHINGTON, May 20 (UPI) -- David Wright had three of his four RBI in the first inning Thursday and the New York Mets fought off a late charge to defeat Washington 10-7.

The Mets produced a five-run fifth inning, pounded out 15 hits and took a 10-3 lead into the eighth.

New York won for just the second time on an eight-game road trip that concluded with Thursday's contest.

Mets starter John Maine left for precautionary reasons after facing just one batter and Raul Valdes (2-1) came on to throw a career-high five innings. Valdes gave up three runs on seven hits to get the win.

Wright had a bases-loaded double in the first and a sacrifice fly during the big fifth inning. Rod Barajas added his 10th homer of the season, a two-run shot in the sixth.

Willie Harris had three RBI for the Nationals, losers of six out of seven. Luis Atilano (3-1) took the loss, giving up seven runs on nine hits in 4 1/3.
