NHL: St. Louis 4, New York Rangers 3

NEW YORK, March 18 (UPI) -- Paul Kariya put St. Louis ahead for good with the 400th goal of his career Thursday, lifting the St. Louis Blues to a 4-3 victory over the New York Rangers.

The Blues ended a two-game skid and moved within five points of Detroit for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

Kariya broke a 3-3 tie by tipping in a shot from T.J. Oshie with 11:36 to play. Brad Boyes, Mike Weaver and Erik Johnson also scored for the Blues and Ty Conklin made 26 saves.

New York failed to capitalize on a loss by Boston Thursday and remained three points behind the Bruins for the last post-season berth in the Eastern Conference.

The Rangers have lost six of eight. Henrik Lundqvist allowed all four goals on just 16 shots.

Kariya picked up his milestone goal in his 978th NHL game. It was his 16th goal of the season.

He scored 50 goals in his second campaign in 1995-96, but has been over 40 just twice since then.
