RALEIGH, N.C., March 11 (UPI) -- Brian Pothier scored 23 seconds into overtime Thursday, giving the Carolina Hurricanes a 4-3 victory that halted Pittsburgh's four-game winning streak.
Pothier took a pass from Ray Whitney and fired a one-timer past Brent Johnson. It was the first goal either team had scored since early in the second period.
Carolina won its eighth straight home game, getting 37 saves from rookie goaltender Justin Peters in his fifth career start. The Hurricanes overcame an early two-goal deficit on scores by Whitney, Zach Boychuk and Eric Staal.
Staal scored 2:09 into the second period to give Carolina a 3-2 advantage, but Matt Cooke tied the game on a backhander 4 minutes later.
Carolina remained eight points behind Boston in the race for the final playoff position in the Eastern Conference.
Although the Penguins had their winning streak halted, they picked up a point in their ninth straight game.
