Gonzalez, Massu notch wins for Chile

COQUIMBO, Chile, March 6 (UPI) -- Fernando Gonzalez and Nicolas Massu each notched come-from-behind victories Saturday to lift host Chile to a 2-0 lead over Israel in Davis Cup action.

The wins put Chile in a commanding position in their best-of-five first-round matchup against Israel.

Massu struck first with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2, 6-4 victory over Israel's Dudi Sela, while Gonzalez extended the hosts' lead by downing Harel Levy 2-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 on the red clay in Coquimbo, Chile.

The matches started a day late because of last week's devastating Chilean earthquake, which claimed 800 lives. The Enjoy Tennis Center in Coquimbo was unaffected and the airport was open, but the arrival of players and officials was hampered by the disaster.

Chile is now in position to capture a quarterfinal Davis Cup berth with a doubles victory Sunday, when "Gonzo" and Massu play the Israeli duo of Jonathan Erlich and Andy Ram.
