NHL: Carolina 4, New York Islanders 1

RALEIGH, N.C., Jan. 28 (UPI) -- Cam Ward allowed only a third-period goal Thursday and made 26 saves in leading the Carolina Hurricanes to a 4-1 triumph over the New York Islanders.

It was the third straight win for the Hurricanes, who still have the lowest point total (43) in the Eastern Conference.

Eric Staal and Matt Cullen scored in the first period and Ward took over from there to win for the third time in four appearances.

Staal has eight goals in five games since replacing Rod Brind'Amour as Carolina captain. With a goal and an assist Thursday, Staal reached 400 points for his career.

Carolina has equaled its longest winning streak of the season.

Rick DiPietro gave up three goals on 22 shots. Matt Moulson broke up Ward's bid for a shutout with 4:31 remaining in the third period.
