The Rangers will pay some of the $12 million owed to Millwood. They are reportedly close to signing free-agent pitcher Rich Harden, who would take Millwood's place in the rotation.

Millwood made 31 starts last season and produced a 13-10 record with a 3.67 earned run average. He threw 198 2/3 innings, the most he had worked in three years. Millwood has a career mark of 155-121 with a 4.02 ERA in 383 games with Texas, Atlanta, Philadelphia and Cleveland.

Ray sat out the 2008 season following elbow surgery and struggled to a 7.27 ERA last year in 46 appearances.

The deal was announced at baseball's annual winter meetings.
