VILAMOURA, Portugal, Oct. 17 (UPI) -- Retief Goosen shot 8-under-par 64 Saturday and grabbed a one-stroke lead through three rounds of the European Tour Portugal Masters at Vilamoura.
The South African completed 54 holes with a total of 20-under 196, topping Daniel Vancsik's record 198, set in 2007.
The two-time U.S. Open winner started the day three strokes back of first- and second-round leader, Francesco Molinari of Italy, but opened birdie-eagle on the first two holes, seizing the momentum.
"You get off to a good start like that and it sets up a round," Goosen said. "You gain some spots on the field because everyone is making birdies out there (and) it's nice to get a good round going."
Molinari (68) is 19-under 197, alone in second place.
Lee Westwood (66) is 17-under 199, good for third.
"I am (only) one shot back," an optimistic Molinari said.
