
MADRID, Oct. 10 (UPI) -- Ross McGowan came close to firing the first 59 in European Tour history Saturday before settling for a 60 and a seven-shot lead at the Madrid Masters.
It was the second 60 shot on the European Tour in the last three events.
McGowan finished his round by holing a 20-foot eagle putt on the par-5 18th and finished 54 holes at 24-under 192. Rafael Cabrera-Bello also shot a 60 at the Austrian Open on Sept. 20.
Michael Lorenzo-Vera and Danny Willett shared second at 199. Lorenzo-Vera shot a 64 and Willit had a 66.
Mikko Ilonen and David Drysdale were tied for fourth at 200. Fabrizio Zanotti, Jorge Campillo and Emanuele Canonica were another stroke back.
Sergio Garcia, who was tied for the lead after two rounds, managed only a 71 and was tied for ninth -- 10 shots behind.
