Arroyo takes risk with supplements

ST. LOUIS, Aug. 13 (UPI) -- Cincinnati Reds pitcher Bronson Arroyo knows the risk but says that doesn't stop him from taking supplements that could be banned by Major League Baseball.

Arroyo, who will make $9.5 million this season, routinely takes pills, powders, liquids, caffeine concentrates, ginseng and things found at local vitamin stores to give him an edge on the field.

Most have not been approved by baseball but neither have they been banned, he says. However, some have the potential to trigger a positive test under baseball's performance-enhancing drug policy. No matter; Arroyo takes them any way. Some teammates thinks he's out of his mind, he said, but again, no matter.

"I take 10 to 12 different things a day, and on the days I pitch, there's four more things," he told USA Today. "But, I haven't failed any tests, so I figured I'm good."

And he says, he never knowingly took steroids.
