MARTIGNY, Switzerland, July 20 (UPI) -- Astana teammates Alberto Contador and Lance Armstrong are the overall leaders in the 2009 Tour de France, which enters its final week after Monday's travel day.
Contador won Sunday's 15th stage of the 2009 Tour de France and is in position to retake the title he won in 2007. He owns a 1-minute, 37-second advantage over Armstrong, who won the Tour De France each year 1999-2005 and is returning to cycling's most prestigious race after a three-year layoff.
There are six stages remaining in this year's tour, which concludes Sunday with a ride into Paris. Contador is considered the favorite to keep the lead through the final stages.
Tuesday in Stage 16 the riders cross the Alps from Martigny, Switzerland, to Bourg-Saint-Maurice, France. The 95.4-mile route includes an Uncategorized Climb -- taking the cyclists up more than 6,300 feet in altitude from the start -- in the first third and a Category 1 climb about two-thirds of the way through the race.
