Russia edges USA in world hockey

BERN, Switzerland, May 8 (UPI) -- Konstantin Gorovikov's goal with 1:47 left in the third period Friday gave Russia a 3-2 semifinal win over the United States at the World Hockey Championship.

Gorvikov deflected a shot by Alexander Radulov from the right faceoff circle on the power play, giving the Russians a chance to win the gold medal for the second straight year.

Russia claimed the championship in 2008 for the first time in 15 years.

The Russians will take on Canada in the gold medal game Sunday. The Canadiens defeated Sweden 2-0 in the other semifinal, with Dwayne Roloson recording the shutout.

Team USA will face Sweden for the bronze medal.

"The winning goal hit (Gorovikov) in the back and then went in the other direction," U.S. Coach Ron Wilson said. "We weren't lucky, but I thought we played outstanding. It was a great team effort. We came here to win a medal. Once we get over this disappointment, it's time to get ready for the bronze game."
