WILLIAMSPORT, Md., April 17 (UPI) -- About 200 people turned out in Maryland for a private memorial service for Los Angeles Angels pitcher Nick Adenhart, who was killed last week in a car crash.
The turnout for Thursday's service included Angels' owner Arte Moreno, General Manager Tony Reagins, Manager Mike Scioscia and pitching coach Mike Butcher, the Los Angeles Times reported Friday. Angels' pitchers Dustin Moseley, Jered Weaver and John Lackey also attended the service in Williamsport, Md.
Adenhart, who grew up in Western Maryland, was 22 when he was killed last week, hours after his first start of 2009 -- and just his fourth as a major leaguer. A funeral procession of 70 cars accompanied Adenhart's body to Greenlawn Memorial Park, the Times said.
Scioscia declined to say much about the service.
"It was very private, and we're going to leave it at that," he said.
Angels' spokesman Tim Mead, who attended the service, told the Times: "You just sensed -- certainly the hurt -- but the pride in this community for Nick. It was a very nice service."
Angels' players and coaches flew to Maryland after Wednesday night's game in Seattle. After the service, Scioscia and Butcher returned to Seattle for Thursday night's game with the Mariners, while Weaver, Lackey and Moseley flew to Minneapolis, where the Angels opened a three-game series against the Minnesota Twins Friday.
A public memorial service was held Friday at Williamsport High, Adenhart's alma mater.
Andrew Thomas Gallo, 22, has been charged with second degree murder and drunk driving, among other charges, in the death of Adenhart and two others who were in the car with him in the April 9 crash.
