Perry ties Campbell for Masters lead

AUGUSTA, Ga., April 10 (UPI) -- Chad Campbell and Kenny Perry, both seeking their first major title, battled through blustery winds Friday to share the lead at the midway point of the Masters.

Anthony Kim made more birdies in a single round than any player in Masters history, Gary Player made his final competitive appearance at the Augusta National Golf Club and Phil Mickelson went from almost missing the cut to a tie for 11th place.

Campbell and Perry, however, emerged as the men to beat, thanks to solid performances in winds that led to seven players shooting in the 80s. The 73-year-old Player ended his Masters career with an 83 and finished last among the 96 competitors at 161.

Campbell, the first-round leader, fired a 70 and Perry had a 67 that left them at 9-under 135. At age 48, Perry could become the oldest major champion in the history of golf.

Alone in third place, one shot back, was 2007 U.S. Open winner Angel Cabrera. Todd Hamilton, who won the British Open in 2004, was fourth at 138. Tim Clark held down fifth place at 139 and Kim joined Rory Sabbatini, Shingo Katayama, Jim Furyk and Sergio Garcia at 140.

Kim shot a 65 Friday in a round that included two bogeys and a double bogey. His 11 birdies established a single-round Masters record.

With seven holes to play, Mickelson needed a birdie just to make the cut. He played the final seven holes in 4-under to shoot a 68 for a 141 total.

That was one shot in front of Tiger Woods, who had an even-par 72. There will be 18 players in front of him when he starts the third round as he makes a bid for his 15th major championship.
