Cam Ward needed to make only 12 saves to get the win.

Carolina moved within one point of eighth-place Buffalo in the fight for the last playoff berth in the Eastern Conference.

Tampa Bay lost its fourth straight. Mike McKenna gave up four goals on 41 shots. The Lightning narrowly avoided equaling their franchise record for fewest shots in a game (11).

The teams have met five times this season and Carolina has won them all.
