NEW YORK, Feb. 7 (UPI) -- New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez allegedly tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs in 2003, Sports Illustrated reported Saturday.
The sports magazine reported exclusively that four sources said independently that Rodriguez tested positive for an anabolic steroid and testosterone in 2003 when he won the American League home run title and Most Valuable Player award while with the Texas Rangers.
Rodriguez's name was on a list of 104 players who tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs when Major League Baseball conducted survey testing to ascertain whether mandatory random drug testing would be necessary the following year.
Rodriguez declined to discuss the matter when approached by Sports Illustrated Thursday at a Miami gym.
"You'll have to talk to the union," said Rodriguez, who joined the Yankees before the 2004 season. "I'm not saying anything."
Players union Executive Director Donald Fehr did not return phone messages left for him, the magazine said.
