Jankovic, Safina, Ivanovic win down under

MELBOURNE, Jan. 21 (UPI) -- Jelena Jankovic, Dinara Safina and Ana Ivanovic all made it to the third round of the 2009 Australian Open in Melbourne Wednesday.

Jankovic had a tough time with Belgian Kirsten Flipkens, but the top-seeded Serb came away with a 6-4, 7-5 victory.

Safina, seeded third, defeated fellow Russian Ekaterina Makarova 6-7 (3-7), 6-3, 6-0. Ivanovic, the fifth-seeded Serb scooted by Italian Alberta Brianti 6-3, 6-2.

In other action Wednesday, No. 7 Vera Zvonareva needed just 46 minutes to eliminate Romanian Edina Gallovits 6-0, 6-0, and No. 10 Nadia Petrova breezed to a 6-3, 6-2 win over India's Sania Mirza.

France's Alize Cornet, seeded 15th, defeated Germany's Andrea Petkovic 6-1, 6-0. Daniela Hantuchova, the 19th seed from Slovakia, got past France's Mathilde Johansson 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.
