Matteson leads year's final PGA Tour event

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla., Nov. 6 (UPI) -- Troy Matteson eagled two holes, shot a 9-under 63 and grabbed the first-round lead Thursday at the Children's Miracle Network Classic.

It is the last tournament of the year on the PGA Tour.

Matteson played on the Palm Course at the Walt Disney World Resort. The Magnolia Course is also being used for the event.

A player must be among the top 125 money winners to compete on next year's tour and five players below the 125 mark were within two shots of the lead.

Scott Verplank and Kevin Streelman were tied for second at 64 along with Jimmy Walker, who is ranked 192nd.

Those at 65 included Rich Beem (No. 139), Robert Garages (141), Robert Gamez (190) and Kirk Triplett (245) along with Steve Marino, who is 41st in earnings.

Davis Love III, Zach Johnson, Stewart Cink and Robert Allenby were among those at 66.

Erik Compton, five weeks removed from his second heart transplant and playing on a sponsors exemption, shot a 70. Compton is allowed to ride in a cart for this tournament.
