NEW HAVEN, Conn., Aug. 23 (UPI) -- American Mardy Fish upset top-seeded Fernando Verdasco Friday in the semifinals of the Pilot Pen Tennis tournament in New Haven, Conn.

Fish, a 6-0, 1-6, 6-3 winner over the Spaniard, will take on Croatia's Marin Cilic for the championship of the hard-court event. Cilic beat Luka Gregorc of Slovenia 6-3, 6-3 in the other semifinal.

The 26-year-old Fish, seeded eighth, reached the Pilot Pen final last year, losing to countryman James Blake.

Fish will appear in an ATP final for the 11th time Saturday. Cilic, 19, will be making his first appearance in a championship match.
