MLB: Tampa Bay 3, Toronto 0

TORONTO, July 29 (UPI) -- Matt Garza pitched his first career shutout Tuesday, leading the Tampa Bay Rays to a 3-0 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays.

Garza (9-6) scattered five hits, struck out five and walked one. The 24-year-old right-hander threw 106 pitches -- 74 for strikes -- over nine innings.

Eric Hinske hit a solo homer and Evan Longoria added a two-run triple for the Rays, who moved to two games in front of the Red Sox for first place in the American League East. Boston lost to the Los Angeles Angels 6-2 Tuesday.

Roy Halladay (12-8) gave up three runs on six hits in eight innings, with eight strikeouts and three walks.

Lyle Overbay had two hits for Toronto.
