It was Boston's first visit to Cincinnati since Game 5 of the 1975 World Series, which the Reds eventually won in seven games.

Jay Bruce and Adam Dunn had solo homers for the Reds, who won their second straight. Dunn's blast in the fourth gave Cincinnati a 2-1 lead and the Reds added a run later in the inning on back-to-back doubles by Edwin Encarnacion and Joey Votto.

The loss went to Justin Masterson (3-1), who surrendered three runs on four hits with a major league career-best nine strikeouts in 6 2/3.
