Scott Strange leads the Wales Open

NEWPORT, Wales, May 29 (UPI) -- Scott Strange shot 8-under-par 63 Thursday to grab a one-stoke lead over Edoardo Molinari through 18 holes of the Wales Open at Newport, Wales.

The Australian forged his lead with birdies at six of the final eight holes, including 14 through 18.

Molinari, from Italy, held the clubhouse lead at 7-under 64 before Strange's late rush and had birdied the 18th hole.

"I played very well from tee to green today," Molinari said prior to the closing birdie by Strange. "I think I only missed two drives, I drove the ball well, and today my putting was very good."

India's Jeev Milkha Singh shares third place with Alvaro Velasco of Spain at 6-under 65.

Defending champion Richard Sterne of South Africa opened at 2-over 73.
