Upsets mark Austrian tennis tournament

PORTSCHACH, Austria, May 21 (UPI) -- Daniel Gimeno-Traver was an upset winner Wednesday at the Hypo Group International tournament in Austria and earned a third-round date with Ivan Ljubicic.

Gimeno-Traver surprised fifth-seeded Sam Querrey with a solid 6-1, 6-3 win in second-round play. His quarterfinal opponent will be Ljubicic, the No. 3 seed, who ousted Ivan Navarro, 7-6 (7-3), 6-4, in his second-round match.

Defending champion and second-seeded Juan Monaco also recorded a win Wednesday but it was a first-rounder, as organizers scrambled to make up matches postponed by rain. He played just five games and was ahead 4-1 when Carlos Berlocq was unable to continue due to a right hamstring injury.

No. 4-seeded Mardy Fish and seventh-seeded Mario Ancic both dropped first-round matches Wednesday, with Fish falling, 6-1, 6-1, to Igor Kunitsyn and Ancic holding off two match points before losing a third-set tiebreaker to Robby Ginepri ,4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (10-8).

In another first-round match Wednesday, eighth-seeded Robin Haase beat Sergio Roitman, 7-6 (9-7), 6-4, while Dudi Sela, Blaz Kavcic and Olivier Rochus also advanced to the second round.
