Royals' Guillen takes AL player award

NEW YORK, May 19 (UPI) -- Kansas City's Jose Guillen, who hit .458 last week, was selected the American League player of the week, league officials said Monday.

Guillen was 11-of-24 batting with five doubles and two home runs. He knocked in a total of 13 runs in games May 12-18. Six of his hits and eight of his RBI came in a weekend interleague series at Florida.

It is the second time in his career that Guillen was selected AL player of the week. The other time was May 9, 2004, when he was with the Los Angeles Angels.

Also considered for the AL player of the week award were: Texas's Josh Hamilton, the Angels' Garret Anderson, Minnesota's Justin Morneau, Boston's David Ortiz, Cleveland's Fausto Carmona and Tampa Bay's Edwin Jackson.
