MLB: N.Y. Mets 12, LA Dodgers 1

LOS ANGELES, May 7 (UPI) -- John Maine gave up an earned run and four hits in 8 1/3 innings Wednesday to lead the New York Mets' 12-1 rout of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The right-hander helped his cause with an RBI single when the Mets scored six times in the top of the fifth inning.

Five players drove in two runs each and one of Ryan Church's three hits was a solo home run in the sixth. Three players had two hits each for the Mets, who averted a three-game sweep with their highest single- game hit total this season.

Maine (4-2) walked two batters and struck out four, and 76 of his 117 pitches were strikes.

Los Angeles centerfielder Matt Kemp broke up Maine's shutout bid with an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth.

Losing pitcher Brad Penny was shelled for 10 earned runs and 10 hits in 4 2/3 innings.

The Dodgers had won 10 their last 11 games.
