Top players upset in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS, March 7 (UPI) -- Fernando Gonzalez and Marcos Baghdatis, the tournament's first and third-seeded players, were both ousted Thursday at the Tennis Channel Open in Las Vegas.

No. 4 Guillermo Canas became the only seeded player remaining in the event heading into the quarterfinals.

Evgeny Korolev surprised Gonzalez with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) decision. Korolev, ranked No. 100 in the world, finally prevailed on his 11th match-point opportunity.

Baghdatis fell to Robby Ginepri 7-6 (7-2), 6-3. Ginepri will face Ernest Gulbis, who was a 6-2, 6-1 winner over Peter Luczak in Thursday's second round.

Korolev's quarterfinal foe will be qualifier Kevin Anderson, who defeated John Isner 7-6 (7-2), 7-5.
