NASHVILLE, Feb. 27 (UPI) -- Shannon Foster scored 32 points Tuesday, enabling the No. 14 Vanderbilt Commodores to knock off the top-ranked Tennessee Volunteers 72-69.
Foster connected on nine of his 13 shots, including six of nine from three-point range, against Tennessee, which had just obtained the No. 1 ranking for the first time in the 99-season history of the school's program. The Vols had defeated then-unbeaten and top-ranked Memphis 66-62 victory Saturday.
Jermaine Beal added 17 points and Alex Gordon had 11 for Vanderbilt (24-4, 9-4 SEC), winners of seven straight.
Chris Lofton scored 25 points for Tennessee (25-3, 11-2), which had a nine-game win streak snapped.
The Commodores fended off multiple Tennessee attempts to catch them in the final minute and the Vols' JaJuan Smith's nearly court-long shot sailed over the backboard to end the game.
