VIENNA, Feb. 10 (UPI) -- Austria won the final singles match Sunday to avoid a whitewash in its first-round Davis Cup matchup against the United States in Vienna.
To capture their only victory in five matches, the Austrians capitalized on the absences of James Blake and Andy Roddick.
The world-ranked duo was replaced by normal doubles specialists Mike and Bob Bryan.
Mike Bryan lost to Stefan Koubek 5-7, 0-1 when he retired with a left hamstring injury in the second set.
Twin brother Bob topped Werner Eschauer 6-0, 3-6, 7-6 (7-3).
Eschauer played in place of Jurgen Melzer.
The United States next faces France in the quarterfinals April 11-13 at Winston-Salem, N.C.
France was a 5-0 winner against Romania.
"We hope to make it nice and loud and noisy for the French," said U.S. captain Patrick McEnroe while commenting about the vociferous and enthusiastic crowds in Vienna.
It was the fifth straight year that Austria failed to advance to the quarters.
