NHL: New Jersey 4, Carolina 1

RALEIGH, N.C., Jan. 10 (UPI) -- Travis Zajac had a goal and an assist Thursday and New Jersey limited Carolina to 21 shots in downing the Hurricanes 4-1.

The Devils won for the fourth time in five games and have defeated Carolina in six of their last seven meetings.

Patrick Elias, Brian Gionta and Sergei Brylin also scored for New Jersey and the Devils' defense made things easy for goaltender Martin Brodeur.

The only goal for the Hurricanes, who have lost five out of seven, came from Keith Aucoin. It was the first NHL goal for Aucoin, who was playing only because four teammates were out of action with the flu.

Carolina has scored just twice in its last three games.
