NASHVILLE, Jan. 9 (UPI) -- A 25-point effort by A.J. Ogilvy Wednesday allowed Vanderbilt to continue its best start ever with an 80-73 win over South Carolina.
The 12th-ranked Commodores, who at 16-0 are one of six unbeaten teams left in major college basketball, were playing their Southeastern Conference opener.
Alex Gordon and Shan Foster both scored 13 for Vanderbilt, with Jermaine Beal adding 11.
The Commodores' successful start to the conference campaign sets up a key encounter with struggling Kentucky Saturday.
South Carolina dropped its second straight after winning three in a row. The Gamecocks (8-7) were paced by 22 points from Devan Downey and 21 from Zam Frederick.
After South Carolina got back in the game with a 10-point run in the second half, the Commodores put together a 16-7 surge that gave them a 68-57 cushion.
