Johnson captures Homestead pole

HOMESTEAD, Fla., Nov. 16 (UPI) -- Jimmie Johnson Friday captured the pole for Sunday's Ford 400 Nextel Cup auto race at Homestead, Fla.

The race is the last of 10 at season's end to determine the winner of the "Chase for the Nextel Cup." Johnson appears to have a lock on the title.

He has driven his No. 48 Lowe's Chevrolet to four straight victories, and will enter Sunday's race with an 86-point lead over teammate Jeff Gordon, his nearest challenger.

Friday, he spun a best lap of 30.545 seconds (176.788 miles per hour) to capture his fourth pole this season, and the 13th of his Cup career.

"He's on a roll," said Ryan Newman, who will start beside Johnson after recording the day's second-best time of 30.583 seconds.

"I felt like we had a good car in practice today," Johnson added, "(but) Ryan put up a solid number and I wasn't sure we could get close to that."

Kasey Kahne and Matt Kenseth make up row two.
