NHL: Carolina 3, Vancouver 1

RALEIGH, N.C., Oct. 22 (UPI) -- Ray Whitney had a goal and an assist Monday to lead the Carolina Hurricanes to a 3-1 victory over the Vancouver Canucks.

Cory Stillman and Chad LaRose also had goals and Cam Ward had 19 saves for the Hurricanes.

Brendan Morrison scored the only goal and Roberto Luongo had 28 saves for the Canucks, who have three losses in their last four games.

Carolina dominated the first period, but Luongo stopped all 16 Carolina shots in that period.

Stillman got Carolina's first goal at 5:07 of the second period and the Hurricanes increased their lead to 2-0 at 7:01 of the third period on a breakaway goal by LaRose.

Vancouver got a goal with 6:41 left in the third period.
