NHL: Ottawa 3, Atlanta 1

ATLANTA, Oct. 10 (UPI) -- Antoine Vermette scored the go-ahead goal Wednesday night as Ottawa beat the Atlanta Thrashers, 3-1.

Vermette’s tally at 1:42 of the third broke a 1-1 tie, and put the Senators in front to stay.

Chris Kelly and Joe Corvo also scored once each, and goalie Brian Elliot stopped 28 of 29 shots.

The victory left the Senators unbeaten through their first five games in the new NHL season.

Atlanta’s lone goal was scored by left wing Ilya Kovalchuk at 6:56 of the first.

Goaltender Keri Lehtonen was beaten three times on 36 Ottawa shots for the winless Thrashers (0-3-0).

On the power play, Ottawa went 0-for-4, and Atlanta was 0-for-3.
