Edwards' NASCAR penalties will stand

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., Oct. 10 (UPI) -- Penalties handed out to NASCAR driver Carl Edwards and his team for a rules violation last month will stand, officials for the race organization said Wednesday.

Edwards and his team had appealed the original ruling.

Edwards won the Dodge Dealers 400 Sept. 23, but his car failed a post-race inspection at Dover International Speedway. The car was found to have been lowered in the right rear, violating rules governing NASCAR's CAR of Tomorrow.

The driver was penalized 25 champion points, dropping him at the time from third to sixth in the chase for the Nextel Cup championship. He is now 205 points behind leader Jeff Gordon.

Edwards crew chief Bob Osborne was fined $25,000 and there was a 25-point penalty of car owner championship points for Roush Fenway Racing.
