MLB: Boston 7, Baltimore 6

BALTIMORE, Sept. 6 (UPI) -- Jason Varitek drove in the go-ahead run in the ninth inning Thursday night to give the Boston Red Sox their fifth victory in six games, 7-6 over Baltimore.

Coco Crisp had three hits, one of them a three-run homer, and scored three times, but the Orioles fought the Red Sox to a 6-6 tie through eight innings.

With Danys Baez (0-6) on the mound, Crisp opened the ninth with an infield single and then stole second. Varitek came in to pinch-hit and singled Crisp home.

Jonathan Papelbon worked a perfect bottom half of the inning to earn his 34th save.

That made a winner out of Clay Buchholz (3-0), who last weekend became the first Boston rookie to throw a no-hitter. He gave up one hit in three innings of relief Thursday night.

Boston starter Tim Wakefield gave up nine hits and six runs over 3 2/3 innings and received his first no decision of the season. Wakefield had registered a decision in 26 consecutive starts, the longest such streak in the majors in 14 years.
