Nadal ousted at Open

FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y., Sept. 5 (UPI) -- Second-seeded Spaniard Rafael Nadel was upset by countryman David Ferrer in the fourth round of the U.S. Open in New York Tuesday.

Ferrer, the 15th seed, spotted Nadal, the reigning three-time French Open champ, the first set on a tiebreaker, then took the next three sets for a 6-7 (3-7), 6-4, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 victory. With Nadal hobbled by injuries, the match lasted three hours, 28 minutes. Ferrer now takes on Argentina's Juan Ignacio Chela.

Third-seeded Serb Novak Djokovic survived his match with Juan Monaco, taking just under four hours to dispatch the Argentine 7-5, 7-6 (7-2), 6-7 (6-8), 6-1.

Up next for Djokovic is 17th-seeded Carlos Moya, who got past Latvian teenager Ernests Gulbis 7-5, 6-2, 6-7 (5-7), 6-4.

Chela, seeded 20th, reached his first-ever U.S. Open quarterfinal by outlasting Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (8-6), 1-6, 6-4. The lackluster match featured 15 breaks and 117 unforced errors.

On Wednesday, American Andy Roddick faces world No. 1 Roger Federer, the reigning three-time U.S. Open champ.
