Henin downs Serena to reach Open semis

NEW YORK, Sept. 4 (UPI) -- Reigning world No. 1 Justine Henin defeated Serena Williams Tuesday advancing to the semifinals of the 2007 U.S. Open.

The top-seeded Henin, who is looking for her first U.S. Open title since 2003, beat the eighth-seeded Williams 7-6 (7-3), 6-1.

Henin improved to 4-2 over Williams in their career Grand Slam matchups. Tuesday was the third Grand Slam quarterfinal clash of the season between these two. The Belgian star topped her American counterpart in the French Open and Wimbledon quarterfinals this year..

The six-time major titlist Henin is the reigning three-time French Open champion. Henin was last year's U.S. Open runner-up to Maria Sharapova and won the title in the U.S. Open in 2003.

Henin, who will face the winner of Wednesday's quarterfinal match between Venus Williams and Jelena Jankovic, leads the WTA Tour with six titles this season.
