Kuznetsova rallies to earn spot in quarter

NEW HAVEN, Conn., Aug. 23 (UPI) -- Top-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova fought off an upset bid Wednesday, but No. 2 seed Daniela Hantuchova was ousted from the Pilot Pen.

After losing the first set, Kuznetsova came back to defeat Agnieszka Radwanska 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 to earn a quarterfinal berth.

Hantuchova fell to Agnes Szavay 7-5, 6-3. The 18-year-old Szavay won over a Top-10 player for the first time in her career.

Third-seed Marion Bartoli got past Virginia Ruano Pascual 6-0, 6-4, and No. 4 seed Dinara Safina was a 6-1, 6-3 winner over Vania King.

Former world No. 1 Lindsay Davenport returned to the circuit as doubles partner to Lisa Raymond, but they lost to Cara Black and Liezel Huber in three sets.
