George Mitchell has prostate cancer

NEW YORK, Aug. 11 (UPI) -- Former U.S. Sen. George Mitchell, who is leading baseball’s investigation into alleged players' steroids use, has been diagnosed with prostate cancer.

A statement Saturday from Mitchell’s law firm, DLA Piper, called the cancer small and low grade, and added the prognosis was good.

Mitchell has been leading baseball’s probe of performance-enhancing drugs since 2006. The New York Daily News said Mitchell predicted the investigation would be wrapped up in the coming months.

Mitchell also was lauded for his role in diplomatic efforts in the Middle East and Northern Ireland.
