Jets RB Curt Martin to retire

NEW YORK, July 24 (UPI) -- New York Jets running back Curtis Martin, the fourth leading rusher in NFL history, is expected to announce his retirement this week.

The New York Post reported Tuesday Martin will make his retirement plans public Friday.

Martin, 34, hasn't played in the NFL since 2005 when he had knee surgery. His right knee has a degenerative bone-on-bone condition. The Jets have changed his status from physically-unable-to-perform so he could take care of retirement issues, the newspaper said.

In 11 NFL seasons, including eight with the Jets and three with the New England Patriots, Martin rushed for 14,101 yards and 90 touchdowns. In 2004 he won the NFL rushing title with 1,697 and became one of two NFL players to rush for at least 1,000 yards in 10 consecutive seasons. His 10,302 yards while a New York Jet represent a franchise record.
