Neal Lancaster leads John Deere Classic

SILVIS, Ill., July 12 (UPI) -- Neal Lancaster shot a 7-under 64 Thursday for a one-shot lead after one round of the John Deere Classic at Silvis, Ill.

Lancaster, 13 years removed from his only PGA Tour victory, was in the first group off the tee at the TPC Deere Run course. He took advantage of perfect greens to finish a stroke in front of Duffy Waldorf, Kenny Perry, Scott Gutschewski, Jason Dufner and Paul Stankowski.

Waldorf bogeyed his final hole to miss out on a share of the lead.

Lancaster, 44, has spent most of this year on the Nationwide Tour. This is only his fourth PGA Tour appearance and his best finish has been a tie for 24th.

His lone tour triumph came at the 1994 Byron Nelson Classic.

Bob May and Kevin Sutherland were tied for seventh at 66.

The field is lacking this week, with most of the top players resting for next week's British Open or already in Scotland. Masters winner Zach Johnson, ranked fifth in the year-long points chase, is the only member of the top 10 in the tournament.
