Guillen charges MLB targets Latinos

CHICAGO, June 7 (UPI) -- Chicago White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen claims baseball has targeted Latino players in an investigation of players using performance-enhancing substances.

Guillen has made a Spanish-speaking video on the dangers of using substances like steroids, The Chicago Tribune said.

"They tried to make sure Latino players were involved too much," Guillen told the newspaper about his session with former U.S. Senator George Mitchell and four other officials last summer.

Mitchell heads a group authorized by Major League Baseball to conduct a league-wide investigation of the problem.

"It bugged me because I made a video about it," Guillen said. "I don't want Latin kids being involved with something because I know for a fact those kids don't go out and say 'Can you go out and do this for me so I get better?'"

Guillen's comments follow a controversial statement by Detroit outfielder Gary Sheffield earlier this week.

Sheffield said Latino baseball players are "easier to control" than American-born players.
