NEW YORK, May 18 (UPI) -- Endy Chavez hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth inning Friday to power the New York Mets to a 3-2 victory over the New York Yankees.
Carlos Delgado hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first to account for the Mets' other run. Paul Lo Duca scored a run and had two of the five hits for the home-standing Mets, who opened the Subway Series with the fourth win in their last five games.
Winner Oliver Perez (5-3) scattered two earned runs on five hits over 7 2/3 innings. He walked two and struck out five.
Billy Wagner earned his 10th save of the season.
Hideki Matsui hit a two-run homer and had two of the six hits for the Yankees, who have lost three of four.
Loser Andy Pettitte (2-3) gave up three earned runs on five hits in seven innings. He faced the Mets for the first time since the start of the 2000 World Series.
