INDIANAPOLIS, May 12 (UPI) -- Brazilian Helio Castroneves won the pole Saturday for this year's 91st running of the Indianapolis 500.
The No.3 Penske Racing driver had a four-lap average of 225.817 miles per hour to edge runnerup Tony Kanaan. The pole victory was Castroneves' second pole at Indy, third of the season and 20th of his IndyCar career.
Starting alongside Castroneves will be Kanaan (225.757) and Dario Franchitti (225.191).
Ryan Briscoe had the best early time. Briscoe, who doesn't run much in the series, had a four-lap average of 224.410 m.p.h. But he didn't stay on top for long as first Kanaan and then Kanaan's Andretti Green Racing teammate Franchitti posted up faster times.
After Franchitti and Kanaan, Marco and Michael Andretti went on the track and posted respectable times, but the heat of the day was making it difficult to contend for the pole.
