Yankees put Hughes on the DL

ARLINGTON, Texas, May 2 (UPI) -- Rookie right-hander Phil Hughes of the New York Yankees likely will miss at least three starts because of a left-hamstring strain.

The 20-year-old Hughes was hurt in the seventh inning of his near no-hit performance Tuesday night against the Rangers in Arlington, Texas.

He grimaced after throwing a curveball to the Mark Teixeira and landed awkwardly on the leg after his 86th pitch of the contest.

"He really tried to bury a curveball, and he extended his body, like up to his knee, which is unusual for him, but he really wanted that pitch," said Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman on the team's Web site. "It was obviously important. He extended himself, got over it and that's what happened."

"I was kind of flustered," Hughes told The New York Daily News. "It was one of those unfortunate circumstances, and there's not much you can do about it."

Team doctors said Hughes could miss as much as six weeks.
