Thornton leads NHL weekly honors

NEW YORK, March 19 (UPI) -- San Jose's Joe Thornton was selected the top of three NHL players of the week, the league announced Monday.

In addition to Thornton, the NHL honored Colorado's Joe Sakic and Dallas's Mike Modano were picked as the NHL stars of the week.

Thornton collected an NHL-best 10 points last week as the Sharks went 3


1. He had a goal in each game and had three assists in San Jose's 5-1 win over Phoenix. Thornton is third in the NHL in scoring this season with 96 points (20 goals, 76 assists).

Sakic is ninth on the NHL scoring list after a week in which he had three goals and six assists over three games as the Avalanche continued fighting for a playoff spot. He assisted on all four of Colorado's goal in a 4-3 overtime win against San Jose.

Modano had four goals and two assists as helping the Stars to wins in three of four games. That includes the 503rd goal of his career, giving him the most NHL goals for U.S.-born player.
