Nadal, Nalbandian advance

MELBOURNE, Jan. 16 (UPI) -- Rafael Nadal and David Nalbandian battled 100-plus degree temperatures in winning first-round matches Tuesday at the Australian Open in Melbourne.

Second-ranked Nadal advanced over Robert Kendrick 7-6 (8-6), 6-3, 6-2 and No. 8 Nalbandian powered past Serbian Janko Tipsarevic, 6-7 (5-7), 4-6, 7-6 (7-2), 6-0, 2-1. Tipsarevic ceded the fifth set due to heat exhaustion.

Also on the winners list Tuesday were No. 13 Tomas Berdych and No. 28 Sebastien Grosjean.
